I have always heard that 93 is better for your engine to keep the motor running smooth and quick. Is it truly better? or would 89 or 91 octane be just as good? I have been running 93 in my grand am 2.4L since 05. I notice a pep, but can i get away with spending less?

this is my theroy
ok 89 is the cheapest
now when i had my accliam i did an lil test
between 89 and 93
the 89 i got a few less miles.,when the 93 i got few more
but if u figure it out.for price and miles.it was about the same,,,
but 93 is a little better for cars
also where you get the gas from makes an differance also
with exxon, for my geo storm,i got like 40 miles an gallon
when bp gas i got like 37 miles an gallon
also tunes up helps for gas also, better spark, more miles an gallon and more hp

*tsk tsk*
What grade is recommended for your engine? btw - you can feel free to look this up if you doubt it, but I actually wrote a 25-pg report on this for Chemistry-I at KU. The octane rating is the AKR - anti knock rating, or in other words, a rating of the fuel's RESISTANCE to combustion. This means a longer combustion cycle, and a higher flash point. Translation? Less power, but allows for higher compression ratios (i.e. KLDE's 12.2:1 CR requires a higher octane than the FSDE's 10.2:1 CR). This is the reason higher performance engines tend to require higher octane fuels - since they run higher compression ratios.
If you were to dyno a factory 87-tune car on 87 octane and higher octanes, you'll notice the power output DECREASE across the powerband. It'll feel faster since it'll start to give some kick as the rpm's increase, but I guarantee you that unless you over-rev your engine or adjust the disty for the given octane (which would mean you can't run the lower octanes anymore) your power output will be less throughout.
If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

well then that pretty much answers my question... lol. Pretty sure the car is made for 87... what about 89? Is there much difference between the two? If it's anti-knock... then wouldn't it be better to throw in the 93 to resist the knocking?

Doesn't help any. I wouldn't spend the money, honestly. ***** you get engine knock, I'll get a new engine in there for ya.
Trust me, you won't get engine knock. Not running the recommended octane. In all my years of running 87-octane in my mx6 (93 tune factory) I never once got engine knock - car detected the lower AKR and compensated by pulling timing. Go out to the track, I'd clean her out with a tank of 93 + booster, and then fill her up on 93 and run 13's all day, then switch back to 87 and save myself a little money.

That'll help explain it better.

also when you buy gas
dont buy on a hoy day
you get more fumes ,means u get less gas
also
dont get on a cold day....more water
best time is on a mid day.when its nice and cool
also.if you smell gas,,its good, every get from an pump that just been used
if u smell gas, then its emans they was busy and the gas is better
this is just my theory
i do test my way and i go buy how it reacts to my heavy foot.lol

jersey gas is about $3 a gallon. I pay like 3.11 for 93 octane Shell VPOWER. It runs the best for 1/4mi IMO

3.11 for 93? jesus, i wish. I can't touch the 87 anywhere in NYS for 3.11. Hopefully our next pres fixes the economy

actually putting high test in a engine not made for it can actually do harm. it might run better for now but it is actually killing the motor faster.

Quit your whining until you paid $4.02/gallon. For your daily.

Yet they cannot understand why we are about 3 weeks away from a recession. Why is the consumer market failing? Can't understand why people don't have money when they have to pay half a weeks pay check just to fill up their tank to make it to work next week. I don't get it...... DUAH!
